Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 cup chopped almonds
  • 1 package (8 ounces) mini red and green M&M's or Heath baking bits
  • Additional sugar

Method:

In a mixing bowl, cream butter, sugars and oil. Add eggs and extract; mix well. Combine flours, baking soda, salt and cream of tartar; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in almonds and candy. Chill for 1 hour or until firm enough to handle. Shape into 1-in. balls; roll in sugar. Place on ungreased baking sheets. Flatten with a flat-bottomed glass. Bake at 350° for 15-18 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool on wire racks. Yield: about 8 dozen.
